TÂCHES TEACHES

Music production lessons with TÂCHES

One-to-one lessons in Ableton Live or Bitwig. House music is my speciality.

I teach the practical work of making a track, with plenty of room to experiment. We’ll work on your music and the decisions behind it, from shaping a groove to knowing when to leave something alone.

Working on your music together

We start with what you want to make and what you like about the music you’ve brought. I’m interested in how the parts work together: what gives a groove its feel, how a sound changes across an arrangement, and which details are worth developing.

I can open your project and try edits on a separate version while you watch, or guide you as you make the changes. We’ll compare what happens and I’ll explain what I’m listening for. My aim is to help you hear what a choice contributes, so you have something to go on when you’re making the next one yourself.

What we could work on

We can spend an hour on one detail or follow an idea through a whole piece. These are some of the things I enjoy helping people hear and try.

You’re also welcome to come simply because you enjoy making music and want to try something with me.

Drums and groove

Shorten a kick so the bass has room to answer. Give a quiet percussion hit a little space of its own. We’ll work with timing, note lengths and accents, listening for what makes you want to move.

Chords and bass

Work out how the bass, chords and melody support each other. Try different notes and rhythms, listen to how the feeling changes, and use theory to understand and develop what you like. We’ll keep the explanation connected to the music.

Sound design

Turn a phone recording into percussion, a playable instrument, or an atmosphere. I like making several related sounds from one source. Something you noticed outside the studio can become the starting material for a track.

Making room for surprise

Let patterns of different lengths move against each other, or let the computer choose notes within limits we set. Listen for a phrase you love, record it, and shape it. Choosing what to keep is part of composing.

Arrangement

Develop the sounds you already have into variations, and shape how the energy changes across a track. Preparing a few useful controls lets you play through those changes. We can sketch the whole arrangement, listen back, and work on the details that need attention.

Mixing and software

We can work through a particular mixing question or learn an operation in Ableton or Bitwig. I start with what needs changing: the balance, an overlap, a sound taking too much space. Sometimes the useful move is turning something down and leaving it there.

Watch me work

Watch me break down “For You (My Love)”, build a house track in Bitwig, or work on drums. Hear the music and see how I explain the choices.

Trusting your own musical decisions

If you know your way around the software but keep second-guessing your music, we can work on that too. I often suggest exporting a track and listening away from the controls. Hear it as a piece of music, notice what you want to change, then return with a particular job to do.

When you want to finish something, we can give it a complete shape before polishing the details. You get to practise making decisions across a whole track. And an afternoon spent playing with sounds can be worthwhile on its own. I want music to remain something you enjoy coming back to.

I talk more about perfectionism, comparison and creative practice in my nine-part series, How to Be a Happier Artist.

A little about me

I’m Lex, and I release music as TÂCHES. I’ve released 126 tracks, with over 75 million streams. My releases include music on Anjunadeep, Get Physical and Kitsuné, alongside my own label, Glitter Cowboy.

I also produced three tracks on Eli & Fur’s album Found In The Wild and have made official remixes for ZHU and RÜFÜS DU SOL.

I’ve been using Ableton for 15 years and Bitwig since the day it came out. Alongside making music, I teach on YouTube, work one-to-one with producers, and build music-making tools through Sequins.

What clients say

TÂCHES taught me how to trust myself as a musician. Because of him, I now feel an incredible sense of freedom and creativity where before there was darkness. He is an amazing producer and a one of a kind teacher so if you get the chance to work with him... take it.

After eight years of making music, I’d reached a point where I didn’t really want to try anymore. It just wasn’t fun. TÂCHES helped me get past the perfectionism and the over-seriousness of it all. Making music has become a joy again, and I’m getting back what I wanted most: my own music and the heart of my expression.

Working with TÂCHES gave me real clarity around how to approach drums, mixing and mastering, and starting new projects without overthinking every small decision. Before working with him, I found excuses not to make music because ‘I wasn't inspired.’ Now, I feel empowered to create inspiration for myself.
